Olympic swimmer Helen Smart was found dead by her four-year-old daughter who said, “Daddy, I can’t wake up mommy”.
The backstroke specialist athlete swam for Team Great Britain in the 2000 Sydney Olympics under her maiden name Helen Don-Duncan.
She also earned a bronze medal at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and silver at the World and European Championships.
A mother of two, Helen retired from sports after the Sydney Olympics and took up the role of head at Worsley Mesnes Community Primary School in Wigan.
Linda, Helen’s mother, shared that the former athlete was found dead by her four-year-old daughter at 4 am on Saturday.
Linda also recounted how Helen had gone boating with her husband Craig and their children Heidi and Stanley in the evening, just hours before her passing – and she wasn’t ill.
