Scientists from Tyumen Medical University have announced the discovery of three new species of ticks that can transmit plague, tularemia, and the West Nile virus.
The research, published in the scientific journal Persian Journal of Acarology, indicates that the ticks were detected on bats.

The bat vectors of the new ticks were caught in the Russian republics of Buryatia and Tuva. Supposedly, the main habitat of the newly discovered parasites is Mongolia and China, so future studies require cooperation with these countries.
“Bats are animals that live in colonies, in large groups, which also contributes to the spread of diseases among them,” emphasized university professor Maria Orlova, noting that the new ticks are quite different from known species.
