Designed over a century ago, the M2 Browning .50 caliber machine gun remains one of the most effective and reliable weapons ever developed. Created at the end of World War I by legendary designer John Moses Browning, the M2 became synonymous with heavy firepower and is still actively used by the armed forces of dozens of countries today.

The M2’s history began in 1918, when the U.S. Army requested a more powerful weapon to counter new battlefield threats—such as lightly armored vehicles and low-flying aircraft. Browning adapted his M1917 machine gun, transforming it into a .50 caliber (12.7×99 mm) weapon with greater range and destructive capability. The prototype was refined over the years until the definitive version, known as the M2, was officially adopted in 1933.

Since then, the machine gun has been used in all major modern conflicts, including World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, as well as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Its rugged design and operational simplicity have ensured its longevity across a wide variety of theaters — on land, at sea, and in the air.

Among American soldiers, the M2 is affectionately nicknamed “Ma Deuce”, a reference to its military designation (M2). The weapon has a rate of fire between 450 and 600 rounds per minute and can hit targets up to 1,800 meters away, with ammunition capable of piercing light armor, destroying equipment, and neutralizing fortified positions.

Over time, the M2 has been mounted on tanks, jeeps, helicopters, warships, and more recently, on unmanned systems — such as the Ukrainian Droid Raw 12.7 ground drone, integrated with the Wolly combat module.

Even after more than 90 years since its official introduction, the M2 is still in production and undergoing modernization. Its reliability and ability to adapt to various platforms and combat scenarios have cemented its reputation as one of the most successful machine guns in military history.
