Argentina

The largest combat ships of the Argentine Navy are the four destroyers of the Almirante Brown class. With a displacement of 3,600 tons, they were built in Germany and are part of the MEKO 360 project.

Incorporated between 1983 and 1984, they feature French MM40 Exocet anti-ship missile launchers, six torpedo launch tubes, a 127mm cannon, and an air defense system with Aspide missiles.

Bolivia

Since the 1960s, Bolivia has had a naval force. The country’s largest ship is the patrol boat PR-51 Santa Cruz de la Sierra, which was built in the United States in the 1980s.

With a displacement of 46 tons, it is also used as a transport vessel and is armed with two .50 caliber machine guns.

Brazil

The Multipurpose Aircraft Carrier Atlântico is currently the largest warship of the Brazilian Navy and in South America.

Originally the HMS Ocean of the British Royal Navy, it entered service in 1998 and has been sailing under the Brazilian flag since 2018. It operates helicopters and UAVs.

The largest warship of the Chilean Navy is the frigate Almirante Williams. Incorporated by the Chilean navy in 2003, it was originally a Type 22 Batch 2 frigate of the British Royal Navy, which entered service in 1988.

With a displacement of 4,900 tons, it underwent a modernization process and is equipped with American Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Israeli Barak 1 anti-aircraft defense systems, a 76mm cannon, and torpedo launch tubes.

The most powerful ships in the arsenal of the Colombian Navy are the four frigates of the Almirante Padilla class. Designed in Germany and built there in the 1980s, they were purchased new by Colombia.

Undergoing modernization since 2012, they have been equipped with South Korean Hae Sung 1 anti-ship missiles, the Simbad anti-aircraft system, torpedo launch tubes, and a guided ammunition 76mm cannon.

With a displacement of 2,900 tons, the Morán Valverde and Presidente Eloy Alfaro frigates are the largest combat ships of the Ecuadorian Navy.

Originally built in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s for Chile, they were known as the Leander class and were upgraded in the 2000s before being sold to Ecuador in 2008. They are equipped with MM40 Exocet missile launchers, torpedo launch tubes, and a 114mm cannon.

Paraguay

Despite not having direct access to the sea, Paraguay has a naval force that operates one of the oldest military ships in service worldwide: the Paraguay, with a displacement of 865 tons.

Built in Italy for the Paraguayan Navy, it was incorporated in 1931. Its main armament consists of two 120mm cannons.

The Peruvian Navy’s largest combat ships are the Italian frigates of the Lupo class. In addition to newly purchased units in the 1970s (Carvajal class), the Peruvian Navy employs used units purchased from the Italian Navy in the 2000s.

With a displacement of 2,500 tons, they are equipped with Italian Otomat and Aspide missile launchers, torpedo launch tubes, and a 127mm cannon.

Uruguay

The main warship of the National Navy of Uruguay is the frigate Uruguay, with a displacement of 2,230 tons.

Built in France in the 1960s, it was originally the Portuguese frigate Comandante João Belo, launched in 1967. Acquired by Uruguay in 2008, it is equipped with MM38 Exocet missile launchers and torpedo launch tubes.

The Bolivarian Navy of Venezuela is also an operator of Italian frigates of the Lupo class. Newly purchased, the ships Mariscal Sucre and Almirante Brión were incorporated in the early 1980s.

With a displacement of 2,500 tons, they are equipped with Italian Otomat and Aspide missile launchers, torpedo launch tubes, and a 127mm cannon.
