Frederick Christ Trump, known as Fred Trump, was the businessman who laid the foundations of the real-estate empire that would later propel Donald Trump to prominence as a tycoon and global political figure.
Born in 1905 in the Bronx to German immigrant parents, he transformed small construction projects into one of New York City’s largest networks of affordable housing.
Beginning his career as a teenager, Fred worked as a carpenter, builder, and early entrepreneur. At age 15, he was already building houses for his own sale, and soon founded his company Elizabeth Trump & Son, which would go on to develop more than 27,000 housing units over several decades. His operations were concentrated mainly in Brooklyn and Queens, with a focus on affordable residences financed by federal programs.
During the post-war period, Fred Trump thrived with U.S. government-subsidized projects, becoming one of the leading names in middle-class residential construction. Despite his success, his career was also marked by controversies, including investigations into aggressive financial practices and a racial-discrimination lawsuit in the 1970s, jointly with his son Donald.

Fred Trump is widely recognized as Donald Trump’s business mentor. It was thanks to his father’s capital, properties, and management style that Donald was able to expand the Trump brand into Manhattan’s luxury market and, later, onto the international stage.
Married to Mary Anne MacLeod Trump, Fred left five children and a billionaire legacy that would shape not only the real-estate sector but also American politics—culminating decades later in Donald Trump’s election as president of the United States.
