AirPods are probably the most popular earbuds in the market today, especially for iPhone users. However, like all earbuds – and all devices – they get dirty over time and need a good cleaning.

Cleaning your AirPods can improve the audio quality, as well as reduce the amount of germs that you could be in contact with daily.

When cleaning your AirPods and their case, be careful not to get water or alcohol on the devices.

When we refer to the cleaning of these devices, we are not just talking about ear wax, which often clogs them, but also about the dirt they accumulate when they get lost under the car seat or inside the backpack. And, of course, the dirt that is brought by hands when touching the AirPods.

Fortunately, cleaning your AirPods and their case is easy.

To clean your AirPods and their case, you will need at least a lint-free cloth, some water, and a fine-tipped tool like a toothpick or pin. If there are dirty stains that don’t come off, you might also need some isopropyl alcohol.

How to clean your AirPods

To clean the earbuds, you will need a soft, lint-free cloth and a fine-tipped tool.
For the cloth, we recommend buying a “microfiber” cloth. The fine-tipped tool could be a toothpick, hairpin, needle, or another household item – if you don’t want to use something sharp, a cotton swab also works.

  1. Clean the outside of the earbuds with a lint-free cloth, slightly dampened with water.
  2. Use another lint-free cloth to dry the earbuds, being careful not to let any liquid get into any of the cavities.
  3. To remove the wax that is stuck in the earbud’s speaker hole, grab your fine-tipped tool or dry cotton swab. Gently remove the wax, making sure to focus on the edges of the speaker. If you are using a sharp object, be careful not to cut yourself or puncture the speaker.

If you have AirPods Pro, you will also need to clean the silicone tips that cover the speaker of each earbud.

  1. Remove the silicone tips that cover the AirPods Pro earbuds and rinse them with water. Do not add soap or any other household cleaning product.
  2. Dry them with a soft, lint-free cloth, making sure they are completely dry.
  3. Once they are dry, put them on the AirPods.

Quick tip: to remove the tips from an AirPod Pro, pull firmly at the base of the tip where it’s connected to the earbud.
To replace it, align the tip with the oval connectors on the earbud speakers and push it firmly. This may require a few attempts, but once you align the connectors, it should snap into place easily with a click.

How to clean the case

Before cleaning the AirPods case, remove the AirPods.

  1. Use a lint-free cloth to clean the outside of the case. For tougher stains, you can slightly dampen the cloth with alcohol, but make sure to dry the stains afterward. Make sure not to let any moisture get inside the AirPod holders in the case or in the charging port.
  2. To remove debris from the charging port, use a soft-bristled brush.
  3. To clean the inside of the case, use a soft-bristled brush – the bristles will help to remove dirt from the corners and openings inside the case.
