Avoid washing frequently

Did you know that the very CEO of the renowned denim brand Levi’s says you should never wash your jeans? Although it’s somewhat absurd advice, he is right on one point: you should avoid washing jeans after each wear. In a short time, you will see that the material will start to wear out, thus becoming more susceptible to tears and color loss.

Ideally, you should wash your jeans only every 3 or 4 wears. If it has a stain, just clean it specifically, applying a few drops of detergent on the area. Then, rub and rinse with cold water.

How to hand wash jeans

Hand washing jeans is the most recommended cleaning method to ensure their longevity. So, you can start by soaking the piece for 40 minutes in a bucket of cold water. Never use hot water to wash your jeans, as heat damages color preservation. Then, add half a cup of white vinegar and start rubbing gently, without too much force. Just remember to always wash the piece inside out, to avoid maximum dye loss.

How to wash jeans in the machine

First check on the label of your pants if they can be machine washed, as some pieces require dry cleaning. However, if yours allow that they can be machine washed, you can opt for this method without any problem.

The second tip is to avoid washing your pants with other clothes, especially if they are cotton. Jeans are a dyed fabric, that is, when they come in contact with water, it is possible that they release some, or a lot, of their pigments and end up staining other pieces.

Before putting it in the machine, turn the jeans inside out. Most pants can be washed with regular detergent and fabric softener. However, stay away from bleach, as they are potent chemicals that end up damaging the fabric.

You can also choose to wash your jeans only with household items. Just add 200 ml of white vinegar to the water, with the “high” and “delicate” cycles selected. The gentle cycle of the machine will also help preserve the color of your pants, because the less soaking time, the better.

Another very effective homemade trick for the maintenance of the color of the jeans is to add a little kitchen salt to the wash. For machines with a capacity of 6 kg, add 3 tablespoons of salt to the soap compartment. But if you’re washing your denim by hand, just put 2 tablespoons of salt in 4 liters of water. This is an old trick, but it guarantees the perfect coloration of your jeans.

Let it dry in the shade

If you have the habit of hanging your clothes in the sun, you should know that, in fact, the shade is always the best option. Not only for jeans, but also for any other piece in the wardrobe. The sun is one of the main causes of color loss in our clothes, so always position your clothesline in a covered place.

No more faded jeans!

By following these tips, you will quickly notice how you will increase the durability of your pants, be they light or dark. Thus, you will not only ensure they don’t fade, but you will also help in the maintenance of the fabric.
