During a visit to the Salisbury Plain training area, the Princess Royal spoke with troops from The King’s Royal Hussars and closely observed exercises involving armored vehicles, infantry, and drones, proving that the British monarchy’s schedule can go far beyond teas and ceremonies.

Princess Royal Anne decided to swap, for a few hours, the polished setting of official engagements for a scene filled with dust, armored vehicles, and military maneuvers at Salisbury Plain Training Area. The sister of King Charles III visited The King’s Royal Hussars regiment to meet the troops and closely follow the exercises carried out during the four-week training program.

During the visit, Anne spoke with the soldiers about their training routine and watched demonstrations that included coordination between tanks, infantry, and drones. Not bad for a royal schedule that, from a distance, can sometimes seem limited to balcony waves, discreet openings, and carefully staged poses.

The princess’s connection to the regiment is not exactly new. Anne has maintained an association with The King’s Royal Hussars for more than fifty years and became Colonel-in-Chief when the unit was created in 1969.

In other words, while many people are still trying to understand the role of the monarchy in the 21st century, she continues to firmly follow military exercises with a familiarity that few civilians would have.

The visit reinforces the Princess Royal’s profile as one of the most active and least performative figures in the British royal family. Far from the more media-driven glamour of other members of the monarchy, Anne often appears at engagements linked to the Armed Forces, patronages, and institutional duties, almost always with the same efficiency of someone who clearly prefers action over spectacle.

This time, the spectacle came from the exercises themselves, with tanks, ground troops, and drones sharing the scene under the princess’s watchful eye. It was a useful reminder that, in the world of British royalty, there is still room for someone who trades the shine of official receptions for the noise of engines and tactical maneuvers.
