An Extraordinary Career
Born in Chicago on December 25, 1958, Henderson moved to Oakland at a young age, where he grew up and later became an icon. The Oakland Athletics, a team that had recently relocated to the city during his childhood, selected him in the fourth round of the 1976 MLB draft. Three years later, he made his Major League debut at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.
Despite a modest rookie season, Henderson broke out as a superstar in 1980. At just 21 years old, he demonstrated impressive batting skills and sharp base-running instincts, ranking third among qualified hitters in walk rate and OBP. Additionally, he led the majors with 100 stolen bases, the first of seven seasons where he would lead the league in steals.

A Player of Historic Impact
Henderson was selected for his first of 10 All-Star teams in 1980 and finished 10th in MVP voting that year. However, later analysis suggests he deserved a much higher finish, as his WAR was surpassed only by MVP George Brett.
Throughout his career, Henderson redefined the game with his speed, skill, and tactical intelligence. He still holds the MLB record for stolen bases and is widely regarded as the best leadoff hitter in history.
