The end of an era at Auburn: legendary coach Bruce Pearl announced on Monday (22) that he is stepping down as head coach of the men’s basketball team after 11 historic seasons. The role will now be taken over by his son, Steven Pearl, who had already been serving as the team’s associate head coach.

Bruce Pearl steps down and his son takes on a new challenge

Bruce Pearl, 65, is leaving after guiding the Tigers to the **second Final Four in school history** and winning the SEC regular-season title, racking up 32 victories in 2024 before falling to Florida in the national semifinal.

Over 11 years, he built a legacy of success with six NCAA Tournament appearances, three SEC regular-season titles, and two SEC Tournament championships. Pearl finished with a record of 246 wins and 125 losses, though some of those wins were vacated due to NCAA infractions in 2016-17.

“We built a program from the ground up, won championships, and made history together. I hope I made Auburn proud,” Pearl said in an emotional statement.

The program will now be led by Steven Pearl, 37, who signed a five-year contract. A former Tennessee player, Steven joined Auburn’s coaching staff in 2014 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2023.

“I’ve spent my whole life preparing for this moment. We’re not starting over—we’re building forward with the same principles that have made Auburn Basketball elite,” Steven said.

Bruce Pearl and politics: rumors denied

For months, Bruce Pearl had been rumored as a potential candidate for the U.S. Senate seat in Alabama. However, he denied any political ambitions, revealing instead that he has accepted a new role as an **ambassador within Auburn’s athletic department**.

“The university gave me the chance to stay here and be Auburn’s senator,” the former coach joked.

Legacy in college basketball

Before Auburn, Bruce Pearl also coached **Tennessee, Milwaukee, and Southern Indiana**, making multiple appearances in the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight. Despite past controversies, his career is defined by major achievements and a strong bond with fans.

With Steven Pearl taking over, expectations are high for Auburn to continue its success — and write new chapters in the history of college basketball.
