Rolls-Royce announced on Thursday (18) that it has successfully completed the first run tests of the UltraFan, a turbofan aircraft engine considered the largest ever produced in the world.

The tests were conducted at Rolls-Royce’s industrial facility in Derby, United Kingdom, and were performed using 100% SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), which is the eco-friendly kerosene obtained from renewable sources.

With a diameter of 3.6 meters, the UltraFan is designed to power large aircraft and offers a 10% improvement in efficiency compared to the Trent XWB, an engine designed for the Airbus A350 and already considered one of the most fuel-efficient engines in its category.

This is made possible by innovations such as carbon fiber and titanium fan blades.

According to Rolls-Royce, the expectation is that the UltraFan will result in a family of engines with thrust ranging from 25,000 to 110,000 pounds, and it is expected to be ready for production in the 2030s.

Until then, it is anticipated that some technologies from the new project will be applied to the current engines in the Trent family.
